Watch: Ghostly sounds captured in empty Mexican church

An individual at an empty church in Mexico captured a chilling series of sounds that some have suggested were from the ghosts of past parishioners. According to a local media report, the spooky scene was filmed at the centuries-old Cathedral of Azcapotzalco in Mexico City. Built in the mid-1500s, the historic building played a pivotal role in the Mexican War of Independence as its atrium was the site of the final battle in the conflict. While the church is still in use to this day, on the occasion the spooky footage was captured there, there were said to be no services unfolding.

In the video, featured above, mysterious and eerie sounds that some have likened to wailing or praying can be heard wafting through the building as the witness behind the camera pans around to show that there is no one there. Since being posted online, the footage has gone viral on Mexican social media, with many speculating on the source of the anomalous noises. Some have suggested that the witness captured the presence of spirits in the building. More skeptical observers, however, have attributed the sounds to wind or digital manipulation.
