The man who read alien language: Government scientist may have deciphered Roswell UFO debris symbols
The son of one of the greatest codebreakers that the world has ever known believes that his father may well have been involved in deciphering the symbols found on some of the UFO debris found fallen near Roswell, NM in 1947. In an exclusive interview he indicates why this is so. Further investigation has uncovered stunning corroboration in the form of official documentation from a major US Intelligence agency that the government’s most expert cryptanalyst at the time of the crash, Lambros Callimahos, was tasked to read alien language.
LAMBROS CALLIMAHOS
Lambros Callimahos is widely considered to have been a founder of modern cryptanalysis – the science of analyzing and breaking previously unknown codes and ciphers. Callimahos had a storied career with military and intelligence. When with the National Security Agency (NSA), he established the famous “Dundee Society” which was an elite association of the country’s most expert codebreakers. He was professionally associated with other masters of cryptology such as Dr. William Friedman.
In 1947 (the year of the Roswell crash), Callimahos, then approaching 40 years of age, was with US Army Intelligence (the armed service and branch that recovered the Roswell crash debris). He was attached at a very high level to the US Army Security Agency. Established in 1945, this secretive, highly specialized unit was comprised of best-in-class linguists, translators and code experts. Headquartered in the DC area, it quietly maintained field offices at key installations, including at White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico, a base and state that figure prominently in the Roswell crash story. They collaborated with all branches of military intelligence, and especially with the Counterintelligence Corp (CIC) whose intelligence agent Sheridan Cavitt was implicated in the Roswell crash retrieval. They interpreted, analyzed and discerned meaning from foreign communications of all types and assuredly would have been involved in analysis of suspected alien symbolic communication. Among the Army Security Agency's many missions was to interpret unidentified markings or code found on recovered enemy aircraft or equipment.
Later, when the National Security Agency was established in 1952, Callimahos joined them and led the agency's cryptology efforts for two decades. Given his expertise and work in enemy codebreaking, Callimahos held the very highest security clearances. He was entrusted by military generals and by the directors of intelligence agencies with the most secret communications that our nation held.
There could have been no better candidate for decoding the strange hieroglyphic-like symbols found on a beam-like structure amongst the Roswell crash debris. He was there at the right time, with the right branch, at the right level, with the right clearances, and possessed the right knowledge and experience.
THE ROSWELL DEBRIS SYMBOLS
The late Dr. Jesse Marcel Jr. was witness to some of the Roswell UFO crash debris as a youngster. His father, Major Jesse Marcel Sr., was stationed at Roswell Army Air Field in July of 1947 when directed to investigate a large field of strange, strewn material that descended from the sky to the desert floor on a ranch north of town. The debris was so interesting that he absconded with a bit of the material and brought it home for his family, son Jesse Jr. and wife Viaud, so that they too could see how unusual it was. The beam and symbols that Jesse Jr. recalled are shown in the image below the title of this article.
Jesse Marcel Jr. was a noted ear, nose and throat doctor, and was at one time a military flight surgeon. In 1989, Dr. Marcel drew the symbols just as he so vividly remembered them- unusual “hieroglyphic” figures found on some of the debris. The figures were embossed on a lightweight, 18-inch fragment of a metal-like “I-beam” structure. The glyphs were of a violet-purplish metallic hue and were about ¼ to ½ inch tall. When Marcel Jr. showed his drawing of what he remembered the debris symbols looked like to his mother, she concurred that they were her recollection as well. So unique was the material and the characters on it that Marcel Jr. was able to recall and recreate them decades later.
In Jesse Jr.’s memoir Roswell: It Really Happened, he mentions that in 2005 he engaged Professor Roger Weir, formerly of University of California at Berkeley, to analyze the symbols. Weir concluded that the construction of the symbols was consistent with an essentially “technical communication” purpose of some kind. He believed that the complexity and volume of information contained in the glyphs ruled out counterfeiting or being a product of imagination and strongly supported their authenticity.
Mac Brazel, the rancher near Roswell who originally reported the crash to the Sheriff’s Office, told his son Bill that some of the debris was embedded with strange markings.
Major Jesse Marcel Sr. himself also recounted the beam and strange glyphs and drew them, as can be seen in the rare image below (courtesy researcher Tom Carey):
Though not identical, the recollections of father and son of the artifact are similarly recalled in shape, color and in some sense, the markings.
CALLIMAHOS STATES “WE ARE NOT ALONE” IN REVEALING NSA DOCUMENTS
After the Roswell crash, documents and testimony show that Lambros Callimahos became highly engaged with UFOs and with the concepts of alien language and interspecies communication.
Two NSA documents that were authored by him have been uncovered that pointedly demonstrate this.
In the NSA document with the intriguing title "Communication With Extraterrestrial Intelligence", Callimahos delivers a paper to an engineering society in 1965 on ways to think about understanding an alien language. It opens with a bold and direct statement: “We are not alone.”
In another (previously classified “Secret”) NSA document from 1968 titled "UFO Hypothesis and Survival Questions", Callimahos makes the enigmatic statement: “If ‘they’ discover you, it is an old but hardly invalid rule of thumb, ‘they’ are your technological superiors.” Originally this document had curiously blocked out the names of the authors. However, a FOIA request for the release of these names was granted and Callimahos’s name was on it. His son confirms that his father was one of the authors.
Callimahos continues in the document, “Some UFOs are related to extraterrestrial intelligences…Human history shows us time and again the tragic results of confrontation between a superior civilization and a technologically inferior civilization.”
The document also shows that when at the NSA, Callimahos was monitoring the UFO literature. He references researchers/authors of the time such as Jacques Vallée, J. Allen Hynek, and Edward J. Ruppelt.
This only begins to speak to Callimahos’s involvement in extraterrestrial analysis, as explained by his son.
THE CODEBREAKER’S SON SPEAKS
This author located and interviewed Callimahos’s son Andrew. Now in retirement in the Mid-Atlantic area of the country, Andrew was very welcoming of my call. He was forthcoming and articulate and did not find my call to him to be unusual at all. This is because he thinks that if the Roswell crash included symbols or glyphs on the debris, his father certainly would have been called in to consult.
He agreed that his father, in Army Intelligence when the crash happened as the lead cryptanalyst, held extremely high clearances, the needed expertise, and would have been the one that would have provided insight into these symbols. Andrew himself has traveled to the Roswell Museum in New Mexico to learn more about the event.
He states that there are other reasons to believe that his father may have been involved.
Remarkably, he adds that his father, during the 1960s, had received raw reports of sightings recorded by Project Blue Book, the Air Force project that ran for many years to collate and analyze UFO sightings. His father pored over these reports before they were made public. Why a NSA cryptologist would be involved in the Air Force’s Project Blue Book is not known. Perhaps those sightings that involved an attempt at communication with humans in some way, or those sightings with observed symbols or markings, fell under his analysis. He thought that his father may have had direct participation in some significant UFO event or study prior to the 1960s for his father to have been in the unusual position of receiving and examining such reports.
Callimahos’s son also mentioned his father’s close association with the late Dr. John Lilly. Lilly is probably best known for his professional work in studying the transfer of information between different species, such as between humans and dolphins. Lilly also had an interest in using isolation chambers as a potential tool to link communication of inner space with outer space. Lilly was a strong proponent in the reality of extraterrestrial intelligent life. Callimahos showed strong interest in cross-species topics in these discussions.
He indicates too that his father had frequent dialog with the late famed planetary scientist Dr. Carl Sagan where they talked about cosmology and the nature of the universe.
He was well aware of his father’s authorship of the telling documents about UFOs and extraterrestrial communication when his father was at the NSA. He never questioned his father (who died in 1977) about his work on UFOs and alien communication or about any work-related topics because he knew his father worked on very highly classified projects.
He concurs that if his father participated in Roswell symbol debris analysis, this would have been why he continued to be a government asset in the years that followed on matters relating to UFOs and interspecies communication. It could account for his father’s near obsession with cracking the alien code. It may well explain the seemingly incongruous interest in UFOs by the top US Intelligence cryptologist at the time of the Roswell crash and for many years following the incident.
ALIENS AND SYMBOLS
Symbolic communication is a common feature of intelligent life on Earth and may be a universal characteristic of life across the cosmos. Symbolic communication allows for the efficient and complex exchange of information, which can be crucial for survival and cultural development. Some scientists believe that the evolutionary forces that shape life on Earth will also produce similar features in extraterrestrial life, meaning that life and language throughout the cosmos may share certain features. Humans, apes, and dolphins use various forms of symbolic communication, demonstrating that it's not unique to our species.
Evidence suggests that Lambros Callimahos holds a more significant place in history than was previously known. He may well have been the very first person to have ever engaged in “exolinguistics” or “astrolinguistics” – the secret science of decoding alien language and symbols.
