Strange beings in the centre of Melbourne, Australia
Location: Melbourne, Victoria, Australia
Date: 1984 Time: afternoon
A man named Jay Williams reported encountering some very strange entities on St Kilda Road in the center of Melbourne.
He saw two of them, both very tall – about 7 feet tall, with heads a little small for their bodies, but very upright posture. Both were of uniform appearance, including height, build, clothing, and pendulum gait. He saw them for the longest time from behind, and then from the side (of one of them). He never saw either of them face to face. They presented like human twins who make a point of wearing identical clothes and “hair” styles. They were both wearing grey suits, like human business suits, except that there were no pleats, wrinkles, or folds in their jackets and trousers. The suits were “tailored” perfectly to fit their bodies, but they were not jumpsuits. They were like human business suits, although perhaps more close-fitting than some business suits. But that impression might also have been because they were so thin. Williams does ot know if the suits had lapels, because he only saw them from the side and back. What was idiosyncratic about their suits is that the sleeve ends, and he thinks the trouser cuffs, although his memory has faded on that, were turned outward like the flared end of a trumpet or clarinet – seemingly a quirkish fashion touch.
Their heads were skull-like, with medium-grey skin, and either no hair on their scalp areas or possibly shaved hair. Their heads were almost rectangular, skulls with some skin over them. The nearest “human” looking like this that Williams could think of would be “Dick Tracy”, if you go back to that newspaper comic era, only with less prominent and sharp noses than Dick Tracy. Trying to place them somewhere in the human family, the only thing he could think of was tough convicts who had lived hard lives in a Soviet Gulag for 30 years and had become even more brutal there over that time to survive. They looked hard, cruel, and as if they liked murdering people – almost comic-book caricature thugs. Williams could not remember seeing either their hands or their feet, even though his attention was caught by their unusual, flared cuffs.
Williams adds that he was idling on his bike by the park, barely peddling, just coasting, when up ahead he saw a very strange scene: two tall creatures, who instantly did not look human, or Earthly, to him, were walking with their legs spread wider than their (narrow) shoulders as though they had heave lead weights around their ankles and in their shoes, or were wearing invisible chain gang chains, or rods with weights keeping their legs wide apart. The legs seemed to be spread for stability, to keep from losing their balance and falling over, perhaps like stilt walkers. As each foot was lifted off the ground, their weight shifted to their opposite foot, and their upper body swayed from side to side like a metronome. Although Williams peddles were barely turning over, he was catching up with the lumbering oddities up ahead. He had to make a decision whether to pass them, within a few inches, stay behind them, or take some sort of detour into St. Kilda Road around them. He did not really want to be too close to them, so he watched the eyes of the first wave of office workers heading home approaching the two tall aliens to see how they, who were closer than him to them, would react to the spectacle.
Williams became really concerned when no one in this swarm of humanity ever looked at these tall figures, or in any way acknowledge their presence, or looked at them. At some point, the hair on the back of his neck stood up -either at first sight, or when the blindness of his fellow humans to these odd giants towering over them confirmed to him that these were supernatural people. Compared to the office workers, the aliens seemed at least twice as tall, so maybe they were getting up into the 3.5m range. Williams also noted that none of the dense human crowd bumped into the aliens they could not see, instead moving like water around rocks in a stream.
Williams wanted to see what these figures looked like, so he crossed half of St. Kilda Road, and again just drifted forward while looking sideways at the trailing alien. Although St. Kilda Road has at least 6 if not 8 vehicle lanes, and was the city’s original grand boulevard, at the time of the encounter traffic was not allowed to cross the bridges and had to make U-turn in the opposite direction just before the bridge. Williams could not remember if that were just during rush hour, or all day. So, he had St. Kilda Road to himself, without any obstructing vehicles. Also, the immediate area was deserted of people, until the first wave of city workers came swarming towards the aliens and Williams. Those who had visited the nearby art gallery on the opposite side of the road had already left the area, as the gallery kicks visitors out starting at 16:45 every day. So, Williams was in a strangely deserted spot during the time of the encounter, until the crowds of office workers started walking down St. Kilda Road in throngs.
He had a good chance to study the trailing alien for a while, while drifting on his bike, until the alien became aware of his stare, at which point he slowly swiveled his head towards Williams and got rid of Williams in a unique way with his “gorgon” stare. According to Williams the aliens looked like “tourists” to him because of their slow, relaxed gait, and they were swiveling their heads to look at everything, including the humans coming towards them. They were looking at everything, or perhaps scanning everything in their omniscient photographic memories. One important thing Williams learned from this experience is that these aliens have so much more brain power than humans. They are like supercomputers, based on their easy ability to store and quickly display all of infinity in their brains, or so it seemed. There is no middle ground of equality between humans and aliens, or at least this race of aliens. It is more like the meeting of minds between “humans and an oyster.”
In time Williams forgot the event and never intended to report it to anyone. He and his wife have experienced other unusual encounters.
