Russian divers alien encounter at Lake Baikal 1982
The story of Lake Baikal and its connection to alleged alien encounters is one of the more fascinating tales of UFO lore, rooted in Siberian folklore, eyewitness accounts, and unexplained phenomena. Lake Baikal, the world’s deepest freshwater lake, is a hotspot for mysterious sightings, strange lights, and bizarre underwater activity. Here’s an account of the most notable alien-related stories associated with the lake:
ORIGINAL SOURCE
There are all kinds of legends connected to Lake Baikal. This particular legend originated from a book written by Russian/Soviet UFOlogist Vladimir Azhazha. He was a former Soviet submariner and a former expert on underwater research, but he had been doing UFOlogy for decades, and it has been noted that he was caught making outright false claims on several occasions.
UNDERWATER DIVER ALIEN ENCOUNTER 1982
In his book one of the most compelling stories comes from Soviet military reports during the Cold War. In 1982, a team of Soviet Navy divers was conducting training exercises in the depths of Lake Baikal. At a depth of about 50 meters (164 feet), they allegedly encountered strange humanoid beings underwater.
Description of the Beings: These entities were described as over 9 feet tall, wearing tight, silvery suits and no apparent diving equipment. Despite being in deep, frigid water, they seemed unbothered by the conditions.
Alexey Tivanenko, a doctor of history, said: “At a depth of 50 meters, they encountered swimmers about three meters high, dressed in tight-fitting silver suits. They had no diving or other devices, just helmets on their heads. "They were ordered to catch the Ihtiander (half-boy, half-shark, modern Russian folklore)
Attempt to Capture: The divers reportedly attempted to capture one of these beings. In response, the beings emitted a powerful force that propelled the divers to the surface rapidly, that resulted in severe decompression. They had two decompression devices, but one was broken. The seven people could not be put inside, so they only put four, therefore three divers, who were not put in the device died on the beach.
This incident was documented in classified Soviet military files. It has since become a central story in Lake Baikal’s UFO lore.
OTHER CASES
For example, Vyacheslav Lavretevich, a rescuer, recalled an incident but did not give a date. “We were on a yacht on Lake Baikal, and under us a huge glowing disc. The light from it blinded us, and for three minutes, it shone from below (the surface) and it rose up and flew into the sky and was out of sight in one second. "We didn't even have time to take cameras or take video, even if many of us saw it. It was a huge - and illuminated our entire yacht. Its diameter was probably 500 to 700 meters, (2000ft-1/2mile) a huge disc. "The spectacle was immense, impressive, beautiful and shocking."
In April 2009, multiple witnesses reported a large disc-shaped object hovering over the lake before plunging into the water. Some locals claimed to have seen the object emerge later, dripping with water, before flying away at high speed. This event sparked further speculation that Lake Baikal might host an underwater alien base or portal.
A CULTURAL TOUCHSTONE
Lake Baikal’s mysteries extend beyond UFOs. Siberian folklore often attributes supernatural qualities to the lake, including tales of ancient spirits and beings that guard its depths. These stories, combined with modern UFO reports, contribute to its mystique as one of Earth’s most enigmatic locations.
