Lake Barkley Bigfoot: An encounter that was never supposed to be told

A quiet fishing trip in the foggy waters of Lake Barkley turned into a life-changing moment when a Kentucky teenager and her father watched a massive Bigfoot throwing rocks along the shoreline. What they witnessed later collided with local legends of the Land Between the Lakes, creating unanswered questions that have lingered for more than twenty years.

"Hi, Lon. I currently live in southern Illinois with my husband, but I grew up in rural Lyon County, Kentucky, where I spent a lot of time in the woods and around the water. My dad and I would often spend our weekends fishing.

One early morning in April 2001, when I was 14, we pulled the boat out of the slip and headed south into Lake Barkley. It was an incredibly overcast day with heavy fog, and we almost decided to cancel our trip. However, about an hour after we started on the river, the sun broke through the clouds, and the fog began to lift. My dad suggested we try out some brush piles in one of the shallow bays in the Land Between the Lakes area.

Dad anchored the boat in one of the bays, and we began fishing off the brush piles. We were having a great morning, landing crappies.

After about an hour, fishing slowed down, so we decided to take a break and have lunch. We sat in the boat, about 100 feet from shore, and I think it was close to noon, but I'm not entirely sure.

Once we finished eating, Dad started to pull up the anchor when we heard a loud splash. We looked towards the brush pile and listened to another large splash. Dad thought someone was throwing rocks, so he suggested that we move to another location. As we were pulling away towards the main lake, I noticed something moving along the shore. At first, I thought it was a man walking, but then I realized it wasn’t; this creature had hair all over its body. It was a Bigfoot.

I yelled at Dad, and he looked in the direction I was pointing. He cut the motor off, and we sat there watching the Bigfoot as it threw rocks into the water, seemingly trying to hit something. We watched it for several minutes as it moved in and out of the brush on the shore. Dad wanted to get closer to take a picture with his phone, but I was scared and begged him to leave. The water was shallow, and I feared it might get mad and attack us. He attempted to take a photo, but for some reason, his phone wasn't working correctly.

Then we noticed a smaller boat heading toward us. A man was on the motor, and as he approached, he cut the motor and looked toward the Bigfoot. He definitely saw it, as he turned back to us with a surprised expression.

Dad was alarmed and insisted we leave. By this time, he was upset that someone else had witnessed the Bigfoot. He recognized the man in the boat, and since my dad was well-known in the area, he worried about what would happen if his name became associated with a Bigfoot sighting.

When we returned home that evening, we told my mom what we had seen. She was upset, too. That was as far as the story went; I was told never to tell anyone about our sighting because it could cause problems. I eventually shared the story with my husband, not long after we got married. His reaction was positive, and he has shown interest in what we encountered. I guess we can now refer to ourselves as Bigfoot enthusiasts. That’s why we listened to you and Sean; we were aware of your encounter and enjoyed your podcasts.

That's my story. I wish to remain anonymous, primarily due to my parents' concerns about ridicule. Thanks for reading." DE

NOTE: I contacted DE to get a description of Bigfoot. She stated it was about 6 ½ to 7 feet tall and broad in the shoulders. The hair was thick and dark brown, but she could not estimate its weight. I asked if it was bipedal the entire time she observed it, which she confirmed. She believes they watched the Bigfoot for almost 10 minutes, which I find remarkable. DE was unaware of the supernatural lore of the area, notably the Beast of the Land Between the Lakes. Lon
