British Columbia Sasquatch encounter: Teen hears a calming voice in his mind

In late August 1973, a 14-year-old outdoorsman was camping with his dog at Brewster Lake in British Columbia. During his second night beside the lake, a massive two-legged presence approached within three feet of his sleeping bag, but instead of attacking, the visitor apparently communicated directly with his mind.

WITNESS REPORT

The Journey to Brewster Lake

“I grew up on an acreage in a rugged, heavily wooded area of British Columbia. We worked hard and were often in close proximity to all kinds of wildlife. I received my first rifle when I was nine years old and hunted from that point until fairly recently. This happened 50 years ago, when I was 14.

“I was in the habit of jumping on my motorbike and riding about 20 miles beyond the end of the road where we lived. I followed old logging roads into the bush, then hiked approximately 45 minutes through dense vegetation to my favorite fishing spot at Brewster Lake.

“I liked going alone with only my dog. He always seemed to know where I was headed and would make his own way out, usually arriving about 30 minutes after I did.

“We normally spent two or three days there. I did not carry much equipment, only my .22 rifle, hunting knife, sleeping bag, matches, fishing gear, and a frying pan. Sometimes, I even remembered to bring salt and pepper. I never brought food because I caught and ate fish while I was there.

“I stayed until I could not stomach any more fish or until the weather became too wet. I never carried a tent. I simply slept beneath the stars in my sleeping bag.”

The Initial Sighting

“I had never even heard of Bigfoot at the time.

“On this particular trip in late August 1973, it was just my dog and me. During the second night, sometime between 2:00 and 3:00 AM, I suddenly awoke to the sound of something very large moving through the woods.

“It was walking on two legs approximately 25 to 30 feet to my right, near the edge of the brush.

“I could not see anything because my fire had gone out long before, and the sky was overcast. I looked around for my dog. He normally slept somewhere close to me, but he was nowhere to be seen.

“My .22 rifle was lying just to my left, and my hunting knife was beside me inside the sleeping bag. I did not think the .22 would be much help if a large animal attacked, so I left it where it was and quietly slipped the knife from its sheath.”

The Approach

“I assumed it must be a bear because I could not imagine what else it might be.

“I remained still, hoping it would leave me alone and move on, but that was not what happened.

“I had made camp on a small rocky point between the edge of the brush and the lake. The point was approximately 30 feet wide. I was lying near the middle, between the water and the woods. My feet were angled toward the lake, while my head was facing mostly toward the trees.

“I heard the animal move around behind me. It emerged from the brush and slowly approached until it was standing directly behind my head.

“As it came closer, I prepared myself for the fight I believed was about to happen. Inside the sleeping bag, I slowly raised my shoulders as close to my ears as possible. I moved my left arm across my throat to protect my neck. My right hand rested against my chest, tightly gripping the knife.

“If something was going to eat me for lunch, it might get a cheap lunch, but I intended to make sure it was not a free lunch.”

Three Feet Away

“I had pulled the top of my sleeping bag over most of my head because of the mosquitoes. Only my eyes, nose, and mouth were exposed.

“Even though I was lying on mostly solid rock, I could feel its footsteps through the ground.

“I had never heard anything breathe so loudly. You could breathe in and out as deeply and forcefully as possible, and it still would not come close to what I heard. I swear I could feel its breath.

“I fully expected it to bite into my face. I remember thinking, ‘What the hell kind of bear is this?’

“It stopped approximately three feet behind my head.

“That was when the smell hit me.

“It was unbelievably bad. I cannot adequately describe it. Despite my determination to remain quiet and still, I could not stop myself from gagging and coughing.”

The Voice in His Mind

“What happened next is difficult to explain, and I do not care whether people believe me.

“At that moment, I clearly heard a calm voice inside my head. It told me that I had nothing to worry about. I was perfectly safe, nothing was going to hurt me, and I should relax and return to sleep.

“I was immediately overcome by an intense sense of calm. I also became extremely tired.

“I remember thinking, ‘What the hell? How can I go to sleep at a time like this?’

“My visitor turned and began walking away. Before it had even left, I fell asleep.

“I do not remember hearing it disappear into the woods.

The Following Morning

“I slept well and awoke at first light, at approximately 6:00 AM.

“A cow moose was standing in the lake, submerged up to the middle of its belly and feeding from the bottom. It was no more than 25 feet from where I had been sleeping.

“My dog was also back beside me.

“The experience troubled me for a long time because the animal had not behaved or sounded like a bear. It was definitely walking on two legs, and the odor was unlike anything I had ever smelled. I could not make sense of what had happened.

“I never discussed the incident with anyone until years later, when I finally told my adult sons. I do not know whether they believed me, and I cannot say that I blame them. At least they had the good sense to keep their doubts to themselves.

“I come from an era when telling someone you did not believe them was the same as calling them a liar, and those were fighting words.

“Despite everything that happened, the experience never discouraged me from returning to the area and camping alone.”

COMMENTARY

This encounter contains several details frequently associated with reported Sasquatch activity, including heavy bipedal movement, ground vibration, extraordinarily loud breathing, a powerful offensive odor, and unusual behavior from a witness’s dog. The witness did not visually observe the visitor, however, so the creature’s physical appearance, size, hair covering, and exact identity remain unknown.

The apparent communication is the most unusual aspect of the report. The witness described receiving a complete and coherent message internally, followed by an immediate feeling of calm, exhaustion, and involuntary sleep. Similar experiences have occasionally been described in high-strangeness Sasquatch reports, although they remain difficult to document or evaluate through conventional investigative methods.

A black bear remains the most obvious natural possibility. A bear could have approached the campsite, produced heavy breathing, emitted a strong odor, and caused the dog to retreat. The witness, however, had hunted and lived around British Columbia wildlife from an early age. He remained convinced that the animal moved continuously on two legs and did not sound or behave like a bear.

A sleep-related experience must also be considered because the encounter began after the witness awakened during the night. Hypnopompic perceptions can occur while a person is transitioning from sleep into wakefulness. That possibility would not necessarily explain the perceived footsteps, ground vibration, odor, gagging, missing dog, and movement around the campsite, but several natural and physiological factors could have overlapped.

Unfortunately, the witness did not mention searching for tracks, hair, disturbed vegetation, or other physical evidence after sunrise. The lack of a visual observation or documented physical trace prevents a definitive identification.

There is also a geographic discrepancy requiring clarification. The witness described growing up in northern British Columbia, while the officially recognized Brewster Lake is located northwest of Campbell River in the Sayward Land District on Vancouver Island. The witness may have been referring broadly to the northern portion of Vancouver Island, or the lake name may have been used locally for another body of water.

SOURCE NOTES

The British Columbia Geographical Names Office identifies the officially recognized Brewster Lake as being northwest of Campbell Lake and Campbell River in the Sayward Land District. This differs from the witness’s description of the broader region as northern British Columbia and should be treated as an unresolved location detail.

Current provincial recreation information describes access to Brewster Lake by way of Menzies Mainline and a network of forest and logging roads. This is generally consistent with the terrain described by the witness, although modern access information cannot confirm conditions in 1973.

The BFRO’s British Columbia archive includes historical reports involving remote forests, lakes, campsites, bipedal movement, tracks, and nighttime encounters. These reports provide comparative context but do not independently verify this particular testimony.

FAQ

Did the witness see the creature?

No. The campsite was extremely dark, the fire had gone out, and the sky was overcast. The witness identified the visitor through its movement, footsteps, breathing, odor, and apparent mental communication.

Why did the witness believe it was walking on two legs?

He heard it moving through the woods and around the campsite with a consistent bipedal gait. He also felt the individual footsteps through the rocky ground.

Could the visitor have been a black bear?

A black bear is a reasonable natural possibility because bears inhabit British Columbia and may approach campsites. The witness was familiar with wildlife, however, and insisted that the animal’s movement, breathing, and behavior were unlike those of a bear.

What makes this report unusually significant?

The most anomalous elements are the apparent telepathic reassurance, the witness’s sudden emotional calm, and his immediate return to sleep while the creature was still walking away.

Was any physical evidence discovered?

No physical evidence was reported. The witness did not mention examining the campsite for tracks, hair, or disturbed vegetation after sunrise.
