Say no to Heritable Human Genetic Modification

 Please sign the Declaration to:

1. defend existing prohibitions; and
2. seek a permanent ban at the UN.

The International Coalition to Stop Designer Babies and GeneEthics ask you to help defend the human genome against deliberate genetic changes that are passed on to children and grand-children i.e. heritable human genetic modification.

Please sign our Declaration personally and/or as a group. Call on the United Nations to create an international convention to permanently ban heritable human gene modification and cloning.

Why keep bans on modifying human genes?

Many countries have legislation, regulations, guidelines, codes, and international treaties which prohibit heritable human gene modification. No country explicitly permits it.

The new international Coalition to Stop Designer Babies defends these bans, to prevent babies being born with lab-designed traits that would be passed on to future generations.

Please sign the Declaration to help resist the GM bans being lifted!

The birth of the first gene-edited babies, announced at the Second International Summit on Human Genome Editing in Hong Kong, in 2018, created pressure to lift the bans on designer babies.

Unrepentant, He Jiankui now says he moved "too quickly" and, after three years in jail for conducting "illegal medical practices", he is engaged in privately funded scientific research.

The Third International Summit on Human Genome Editing, in London, March 6-9, 2023, will intensify the science lobby and IVF industry push to allow the traits of future humans to be altered permanently. Their false and flimsy pretext often is that such changes may prevent, cure or treat disease, or improve the quality of life.

Gene editing future humans without their consent, to impose traits that fit our present values and priorities, is eugenics. Eugenicists eliminated “undesirables” (poor, disabled, LGBTQI, etc) from many societies in the 20th century. We must ensure there is no repeat!

The genetic modification tools now available greatly increase the scope for eugenic human selection. Pre-ordaining the ‘desirable’ genetic makeup of our children, grandchildren and other descendants would forever diminish their autonomy and infringe human rights.

Removing the present legal, ethical and social constraints on Heritable Human Gene Modification would also disrupt the genetic makeup of future generations of humanity and the human gene pool.

The Coalition to Stop Designer Babies needs your help to resist attacks on the bans which prohibit heritable human gene editing and to advocate at the UN for a convention with a permanent ban.

Please sign the Declaration personally and/or for your group.
