Astronomers believe they have spotted a "kilonova," or immense burst of light caused by the collision of two neutron stars. Using NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory, the researchers were able to detect an intense X-ray glow in the aftermath of the extraordinary cosmic explosion. A kilonova blast can be 1,000 times brighter than a typical nova event. Chandra is still able to detect light from this massive collision and the X-rays have remained at a virtually constant level since first detected in 2017. "We have entered uncharted territory here in studying the aftermath of a neutron star merger," said astronomer and study lead Aprajita Hajela.
