Description:
The monolithic Churches of Lalibela are eleven monolithic churches in Ethiopia which are cut directly from the bedrock. The construction is attributed to the 12th century ethiopian King Lalibela form the Zagwe-Dynastie who wanted to create a “New-Jerusalem”. The constructions are some of the largest monolithic structures around the world. The church “Medhani Alem” has an astonishing height of 33 meter and is considered the largest monolithic church in the world.
Ancient Legends (reported in the Book “The Ethiopian Royal Chronicles” by Richard K. P. Pankhurst) tell that when King Lalibela was poisoned by his half-brother, angels carried him to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Heavens. There, the king saw a city of rock-hewn churches and God commanded him to return to Earth and re-create what he had seen. Similar legends also say that humans and “angels” co-constructed the churches.
But in the end the question remains what building-techniques the ancient culture(s) used and who these strange beings, called “angels” , mentioned in the legends, might have been?
