Russian embassy in Syria suffers mortar attack

"We confirm that Russia's consistent and principled policy of uncompromising fight against terrorists in Syria will be continued," the ministry said.

The Russian embassy in Damascus was targeted in a mortar attack Wednesday, Russia's Foreign Ministry said in a statement, condemning it as "a terrorist attack" and adding that none of the embassy staff was hurt.

Two of the mortar shells landed and exploded on the territory of the embassy while another two detonated close to its outside perimeter, the ministry said.

Moscow entered the military conflict in Syria nearly two years ago in support of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, one of its closest Middle East allies.

"We confirm that Russia's consistent and principled policy of uncompromising fight against terrorists in Syria will be continued," the ministry said.

Last week, a bipartisan resolution passed by the U.S. Senate in support of the "Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act," includes a provision that allows congress to stop any effort by U.S. President Donald Trump to ease existing sanctions on Russia, which Trump signed into law Wednesday.

The package has been described as the most severe since the end of the Cold War, with Russia being labeled a “hostile regime."
