The international inspectors arrived in Syria at the weekend to visit the site of a suspected gas attack in Douma, near the capital Damascus.

Syrian state television reported that the experts from the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons had entered Douma, where Western countries say scores of civilians sheltering from bombs were gassed to death on April 7.

Douma is now in the hands of government forces after the last anti-government forces withdrew just hours after U.S., French and British forces fired more than 100 missiles to hit three suspected chemical weapons development or storage sites.

Syrian and Russian government officials said 75 missiles were downed by Syrian air defenses promoting President bashar Assad to call the U.S.-led operation a failure and praising the Soviet air defense system.

The intervention threatened to escalate confrontation between the West and Russia but has had no significant impact on the ground, where the Syrian government is now in its strongest position since the early days of the conflict and as Syrian military continues to liberate more cities from the anti-government militias.
