Interview with an Undertaker
Note: We are so happy to have a post from Julie Obradovic today. Please welcome her back warmly. Her 2016 memoir An Unfortunate Coincidence: A Mother's Life Inside The Autism Controversy dovetails all too well with Ed Dowd's Cause Unknown The Epidemic of Sudden Deaths in 2021 and 2022.

Recently, I had the opportunity to speak with an undertaker. Licensed since 1976, he has spent his entire life in the field having been born into a family who owned and operated several funeral homes in Chicago. He continued the family business after getting his degree in Mortuary Science from the University of Minnesota and still runs his own funeral home with his children.
To put it bluntly, he has never not been around dead people.
Although I have never had much interest in the life of a funeral home director, I have admittedly been curious as to what they have witnessed and experienced since Covid began. Is it true? Are younger people dying an at alarming rate? What kinds of deaths have increased or decreased and among whom? Has anything unusual been happening that he has noticed, and if so, what?
I decided to reach out on a whim to see if he would answer my questions. It reminded me of what it was like back in the mid to late 2000’s as a high school teacher. After teaching for over 10 years, suddenly we needed an autism specialist. I had had taught over 1000 students by then and been among over 10,000 in our building. We hadn’t needed a specialist (let alone an entire room) for autism until then, but to hear the experts tell it, students with autism had been everywhere. We just didn’t know it.
Was he being told the same thing now? Was his reality being questioned? It was one thing for me to have 10 years of teaching experience when the epidemic hit high schools. He has been preparing the dead for over 50. It would be hard to convince him he just didn’t notice something.
He answered the phone immediately, greeting me quickly and ready to talk. There weren’t too many pleasantries before we got to business, and he didn’t wait very long to let me know his feelings about the role of the Covid vaccine. I hadn’t even asked.
On average, his funeral home has 250 funerals per year. He explained that when someone dies, he receives the body and the death certificate from the hospital. They aren’t involved in the autopsy, but they know the cause of death. Based on that, he was able to offer the following insight.
In his experience, over the last 3 years, the age paradigm of deaths has shifted. More people in their 30s, 40s, and 50s are dying than before, especially males between the ages of 55-75. He also expressed that more older people are living well into their 90’s, and that among that age group, not much has changed. But among the younger generations, he reiterated, there’s been an increase.
He was quick to acknowledge that he hadn’t officially audited these deaths, so this was all anecdotal. He also acknowledged that although it seemed to him there were more heart attacks happening, he couldn’t say that for sure. He also recognized that it’s possible that many of the deceased middle aged people just didn’t go to the doctor for preventative care for a few years.
Likewise, he stated, many more people seem to be suffering from depression, which can contribute to other health conditions. Indeed, suicides, he claimed, are for sure on the rise. When I assumed they were among teenagers and young twenty-somethings, he corrected me.
“No. They are mostly overdosing. The suicides are among the 30, 40, 50 somethings. And that’s definitely new.”
Regarding cancer, nothing has changed, he claimed. Thus far, he has seen no increase in deaths from cancer, or seen any differences in those getting it, their ages, the type of cancer, or how quickly it seemed to manifest. But he did acknowledge that maybe it’s just too soon to see anything.
However, where he has seen something very alarming happening concerns blood clots. Not necessarily the increase in blood clots, he stated, but more specifically the type of blood clot presenting: bifurcated arterial blood clots.
In more than 50 years of preparing the dead for burial, he has never seen them until the last two years.
I am familiar with blood clots, but I have never heard of a bifurcated blood clot, nor really ever heard someone identify the type of clot by being venous or arterial. No one has ever distinguished between the two in my family, a large number of whom on one side have been profoundly affected by clotting issues for generations.
I asked him to explain what was unusual about these clots, and why it seemed significant. He said I needed to understand the process of preparing a body for burial first. (Warning: this may make you squirm a little.)
When a person is embalmed, he told me, it is done through the carotid artery. But when a person is drained, it is done through the jugular vein. And for the first time in six decades of preparing bodies, bifurcated arterial clots are being pulled out of the jugular. (Or really, yanked, he said.)
He knows they are arterial clots because they are white. Arterial and venous clots are not the same in color or composition. Pulmonary clots are also distinctive from the two. (For a good visual of their distinctions, see this pie-chart from the scientific journal, Nature.)
A quick read of the introduction of that article explains that arterial and venous clots appear to have different reasons for forming. Arterial clots seem to involve platelet activation, whereas venous clots seem to be an activation of the clotting system. Overwhelmingly, when people get clots, they get venous clots. Arterial clots are far more rare.
But more strangely, he added, the clots are bifurcated. Bifurcated means split, like when a river splits off from itself. Our arteries branch out like trees to deliver blood and oxygen to every part of our body. These clots are forming in one artery, continuing to a split, then continuing down separate arterial pathways, and coming out as one piece. And again, he has never seen this before. To him, this is the real concern. What is causing this?
We ended the conversation when I realized I hadn’t even asked him about Covid directly. I reached out to ask what his experience had been.
Did he have a lot of Covid deaths at his funeral home? Did his numbers match the reports we were seeing? Was there a way to tell if people were being labeled Covid deaths because they had died with Covid or from Covid (which as of last week, we are finally seeing being acknowledged as a serious concern when representing the real danger of the disease.)

He texted me back.
“We didn’t have a lot of direct Covid deaths. Probably about 5 that were direct. Mostly preexisting conditions. But a lot of deaths that were somewhat due to Covid. They had Covid before but died directly from other conditions.”
He also said the numbers seemed so much higher, at least as his funeral home, because anyone who put death by Covid on the death certificate received money from the federal government for funeral expenses. There were only a handful of families who refused to do so, he added, knowing that although their loved one died with Covid, they absolutely did not die because of Covid.
So, yes. Five.
Since 2020, at 250 people per year on average for 3 years, he’s prepared approximately 750 people for burial.
In what has been portrayed as the worst pandemic anyone my age or younger has ever been alive for…a pandemic so awful that it closed the world…destroyed decades of progress made in schools…single handedly altered the mental health and well being of an entire generation, maybe forever….that divided families, friends, neighbors, and colleagues and pitted them against one another as enemies…that caused the biggest transfer of wealth in the history of humanity….that forever altered politics and elections in our nation….that stripped away civil, privacy, and medical rights in an instant….and that we still likely won’t know the true devastation of for decades to come…
He buried 5 people who died exclusively from Covid.
Meanwhile, suicides amongst middle age people are on the rise; young people are increasingly overdosing; men aged 55-75 are dropping like flies; and white, bifurcated, arterial blood clots are being yanked out of the dead for the first time ever.
Life is often a paradox, I have found. Wouldn’t it be something if those who prepare the dead end up holding the key to saving the living?
