Deep in the heart of the Amazon rainforest , there is a fruit that locals have been harvesting for centuries: the açaí berry. Despite its relatively recent discovery in the Western world, the açaí has quickly become a global superfood sensation, touted for its high levels of antioxidants and other health benefits .

But with great reward comes great risk, as the process of harvesting açaí is a perilous one. From navigating the treacherous waters of the Amazon River to battling deadly snakes and insects, those who risk their lives to harvest this precious fruit are driven by both necessity and a deep cultural connection to the land.
