Overview

Sardonyx is chalcedony that is coloured black, red, brown and white. This cryptocrystalline quartz can be coloured with iron and carbon inclusions giving it brown and black colouring. It is formed hydrothermally in hollows or vugs in rocks.
Sardonyx is created in layers of brown or red sard stone and black, white or green onyx stone. This gives it a beautiful banded appearance.
The word Sardonyx is derived from the Greek, sard meaning “reddish brown,” and onyx meaning “veined gem.” The best stones are found in India. They are also found in Germany, Czechoslovakia, Brazil, and Uruguay. In the United States, sardonyx can be found in the Lake Superior region and in Oregon.

Cameos and intaglios are often carved from sardonyx. Cameos are figures carved on a stone, where the white layer appears as a relief, and the coloured layer is the background. Intaglios are the reverse of cameos. They are incised figures on the stone, where the stone is carved through the dark layer to reveal the light layer.

Sardonyx was a favourite gemstone in ancient times, popular not only because it was attractive, but also because it was widely available. Unlike most rare gemstones that could only be bought with the wealth of royalty and nobility, sardonyx could be obtained by many less-wealthy people.

Roman soldiers wore sardonyx talismans (to guard against evil and bring good fortune) engraved with heroes such as Hercules or Mars, the god of war. They believed that the stone would make the wearer as brave and daring as the figure carved on its face. During the Renaissance, sardonyx was believed to bring eloquence upon the wearer and was regarded with great value by public speakers and orators.

sardonyx and the chakras

The chakras are the body's internal energy centres, and are aligned vertically near the spine. Energy enters the body through the head (heaven) and the base (earth). The seven chakras are vortex points where these forces mingle, with each producing a distinctive energy pattern. The purpose of these chakras is to absorb, transform and distribute the body's internal energy, known by terms such as prana, life force or chi. Specific organs and body parts are associated with each chakra, as well as corresponding behavioural, emotional and personality patterns. It is important to note that the chakras are in constant interplay, and cannot really be separated.

Human beings are not just the physical body. You have seven auric bodies. These seven unseen bodies are known as energy bodies, energy layers or auras.
The seven non physical bodies aren't separate from the physical body, they are all interconnected with each other. The health of any of these bodies contributes toward the overall physical, mental, emotional and spiritual wellbeing of a person.

When any one of the auric bodies is not working properly, it affects the other bodies and the physical body, as each body relies on the others to gather and distribute energy.
