Overview

Gypsum is named from Greek "gypsos" - plaster, alluding to its practical use. It has been known from antiquity.
Gypsum is composed of hydrated calcium sulphate and takes many forms, occurring as tabular, bladed and diamond shaped crystals. it also occurs in fibrous form, and in compact, granular masses, and as rosette shaped aggregates with included grains of sand.
Gypsum varies from colourless to white, gray, yellowish, reddish, greenish, and brown.

Gypsum is one of the more common minerals in sedimentary environments. It is a major rock forming mineral that produces massive beds, usually from precipitation out of highly saline waters. Since it forms easily from saline water, gypsum can have many inclusions of other minerals and even trapped bubbles of air and water.
Gypsum has several variety names that are widely used.

Selenite is the colourless and transparent variety that shows a pearl like luster and has been described as having a moon like glow. The word selenite comes from the greek for Moon and means moon rock.
Another variety is a compact fibrous aggregate called Satin Spar. This variety has a very satin like look that gives a play of light up and down the fibrous crystals.
A fine grained massive material is called Alabaster and is an ornamental stone used in fine carvings for centuries, even eons.
Desert rose is the colloquial name given to rosette formations of the minerals gypsum and barite with sand inclusions. The 'petals' are crystals flattened on the c crystallographic axis, fanning open along characteristic gypsum cleavage planes.

Crystals of gypsum can be colourless and transparent, making a strong contrast to the most common usage in drywall. The crystals can also be quite large. Gypsum is a natural insulator, feeling warm to the touch when compared to a more ordinary rock or quartz crystal. Sheets of clear crystals can be easily peeled from a larger specimen.

If making crystal water use the indirect method as all these crystals dissolve in water. Clean the stones by placing in sunlight or burying in salt.

Desert Rose

Desert roses are formed when the mineral gypsum crystallises in rose like clusters or lenticular crystals mixed with sand. These form in dry, sandy locations and are also called gypsum rose or selenite rose.
Listen to your inner voice and if necessary, step back and take stock of your life before making any concrete or important decisions. This is the stone of inner gold, which represents your as yet undeveloped potential.

Desert rose is good for aligning your spine and muscles and for bringing you entire body into balance, which helps adjust your emotional body as well. Desert rose is the perfect stone for parents. This is an excellent stone for healing grief and abuse and for letting go of what holds you back from experiencing life to the full. It is good for viral infections, especially of the skin, such as warts. Desert rose also relieves nausea and so is good for those who suffer travel sickness and unsettled stomachs that are caused by tension. Desert rose will calm panic attacks and assist with overcoming phobias, especially claustrophobia.

Desert rose carries the energy of universal love. By reminding you of your true nature, which is love, this stone gives you the ability to expand the love that you are and to attract back to you all that is love and loving. Desert rose is also useful for balancing your chakras so that you can align all aspects of yourself.

Place a desert rose in the centre of your home to encourage family unity. At work, it is good to help you to develop a particular area of expertise or responsibility and for long term training. Carry a desert rose stone when you wish to keep a low profile at a time of possible redundancies, sackings or general tension in the workplace.

The chakras are the body's internal energy centres, and are aligned vertically near the spine. Energy enters the body through the head (heaven) and the base (earth). The seven chakras are vortex points where these forces mingle, with each producing a distinctive energy pattern. The purpose of these chakras is to absorb, transform and distribute the body's internal energy, known by terms such as prana, life force or chi. Specific organs and body parts are associated with each chakra, as well as corresponding behavioural, emotional and personality patterns. It is important to note that the chakras are in constant interplay, and cannot really be separated.
