The Universal Spiritual Brother & Sisterhood (USB)  teaches that when the spirit body travels, as it so often does in the sleep state, it remains connected to the physical body by “the silver cord”, which is incredibly elastic. When that cord is severed, what we call “death” takes place: the spirit body is instantly separated from the physical body it had inhabited, without any pain or injury to the spirit body itself.

Some people believe that the silver cord is not fully severed until about seventy‑two hours after death and that the spirit body may suffer pain or injury if burial or cremation takes place before then. However, the USB stresses that this is just not so, unless, of course, that person has been led to believe it is, and therefore expects it.
