New to the ‘dirty dozen’ list: blackberries and potatoes
Blackberries and potatoes are now on the 2025 “Dirty Dozen” list, which shows the fruits and vegetables with the most pesticide residue. The list is made each year by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) using government testing data. Spinach, strawberries, kale, grapes, and peaches still lead the list. Experts say the list helps people choose when to buy organic, not to avoid fruits and vegetables.
Blackberries were added after recent USDA testing. Potatoes returned to the list because of a chemical called chlorpropham, used to stop sprouting. Many items on the list had several pesticide residues, sometimes at high levels. The EWG also released a “Clean Fifteen” list. This includes pineapples, avocados, and sweet corn, which have much lower pesticide levels.
Pesticides have been linked to serious health problems, including cancer, birth defects, and learning issues in children. Experts recommend washing all produce well and choosing organic for the “Dirty Dozen” when possible. Still, eating plenty of fruits and vegetables is important for good health.
