The zone of silence – the bizarre Bermuda Triangle of northern Mexico

Within the Mapimí Biosphere Reserve, in a place known as the Trino Vertex, lies a patch of desert which has garnered a reputation for strange occurrences. Known as la Zona del SIlencio , or the Zone of Silence, this is a place where compasses spin out of control and radio or satellite signals simply don’t work! The Bermuda Triangle of northern Mexico, so to speak.

The Puzzling Reputation of the Zone of Silence

The first incident to take place at the so-called Zone of Silence in Mexico occurred in the 1930s when a pilot by the name of Francisco Sarabia was flying over the area and claimed his instruments went wild and his radio stopped working. Later, in the 1970s, attention was drawn to the area when a faulty American missile was fired from the White Sands Missile Base in New Mexico and crashed—or perhaps was pulled—into the region.

At the time, the Mexican government allowed U.S. Air Force officials to investigate the crash at the site, which is when the cause became apparent. It was discovered that no signals of any sort are able to penetrate the area—including radio and satellite signals—due to local magnetic fields that create a dark zone, inspiring the popular name of the site.

Research has since been done at the Zone of Silence, an area bordering the Mexican states of Coahuila, Durango and Chihuahua, and the Mexican government has constructed a research complex said to be studying the unusual local habitat and wildlife. Theorists speculate the government is studying more than it is admitting as there are plenty of anomalies to research.

Scientific Findings and Bizarre Encounters at the Mexican Zone of Silence

One of the many unusual observable properties in this area is its high levels of magnetite and uranium deposits, to which scientists attribute electromagnetic pulses that are said to be the source of the disrupted signals. The area is also a hotbed for meteorites. According to Atlas Obscura , two meteorites have even landed on exactly the same ranch; one in 1938 and one in 1954. Scientists have theorized that the remnants of these meteorites exude magnetic properties that may explain why so many iron-rich objects from space end up here.

Other, more bizarre, activity of this nature is reported here, such as the area’s reputation for strange lights, UFO sightings and alien encounters . Some even believe it has been used in the past—and present—as a portal for aliens. Ranchers have cited tales of strange lights and odd strangers that appear from nowhere and claim to come “from above”. In fact, the same three blonde strangers have often been spotted by multiple witnesses.

Witnesses of inexplicable flying objects, often described as “disc-like”, have even reported finding physical evidence to back their claims. Some have discovered burned brush and vegetation at the apparent touchdown sites. Whether you believe their UFO and alien sightings or not, something strange is afoot.

Possible Explanations for the Zone of Silence

Curiously, the Zone of Silence is geographically parallel with the  Egyptian pyramids and the  Bermuda Triangle , and is located just north of the Tropic of Cancer . Scientists at the Mexican research center have named the area the Sea of Thetys, due to its being at the bottom of an ocean millions of yeas ago. But, can any of this actually explain the numerous strange incidents that have happened here?

No concrete evidence has been found to support the claims of extraterrestrial activity in this area, though there are undoubtedly several events that cannot be explained. If the Zone of Silence is experiencing a rare magnetic pull, one has to speculate the extent of the effect it has on the happenings in the area.

Could the Mexican Zone of Silence area possibly be another Bermuda Triangle of activity? It certainly exhibits much of the same behavior. Add to that the countless testaments of extraterrestrial sightings and this area is certainly a hotbed of activity that demands scientific attention.
