Kupidabin Wilderness Foundation at Mt. Sampson Queensland

History: Kupidabin Gatherings of The Four Winds began in 2007 at Mt. Samson when Native American Medicine Woman Verlinda Montoya, Mato Ta Pejuta Wakan Nawjin, translation Bear Medicine Standing Sacred had a vision to come to Queensland to bring together Native American, Aboriginal and Maori Elders. Verlinda sent out a scout to find a suitable venue for this meeting of Elders planned to be held in November 2007.

Kupidabin Wilderness at Mt. Samson was the chosen Place. 10 acres of virgin bush with only a fire circle blessed in 2005 by Aboriginal Elder Uncle Tex Chapman Wakka Wakka. As Representative for the Traditional owners of the land he gave permission to hold Multicultural Gatherings to bring together all Cultures to break down the barriers between Nations. Uncle Tex could see many Gatherings of All Nations on this land.

The early gatherings 2007, 2009 and 2011 were called Reinbo: All Nations Gatherings.

Reinbo derives its name from a dreamtime Spirit creature, the Reinbo Jinek or Rainbow Serpent.

These Gatherings were very successful bringing together Aboriginal, Maori, Native American and Torres Strait Islanders. The Committee of Elders made a decision to make this a bi-annual event.

The future events to be called ‘Kupidabin Gathering of The Four Winds’.

The name was inspired by the book ‘Wisdom of The Four Winds’ written by Barry Brailsford in New Zealand and the story of ‘The Temple of The Four Winds’.

Little did we know at that time – all of Samford Valley was called Kupidabin in the 1800’s when the area was inhabited by Aboriginals and Mt. Samson which towers over our land was called Mt. Boorran.

Aboriginal word for ‘Wind’. The tribe on our land were Garumngar  people who died out in 1860’s.

The area was then known as a Meeting Place for the Turrbal and Jinibara Nations.

Mission: Kupidabin Wilderness is a ‘place of peace and harmony’ with the goal of helping to preserve the beliefs, traditions and ceremonies of indigenous cultures of Australia and worldwide.

Aiming to share this knowledge and experience with all people to allow them to have happier and more fulfilling lives.

Kupidabin Wilderness is also a place where under privileged or disabled members of the Community and those with addictive behaviours can come to connect with nature and enjoy the native wildlife to help them regain their quality of life.

Gatherings: The early Gatherings were sponsored for the catering by The Lyell Deer Farm (Established in 1984) 7 acre property next door, having a large function area (ex deer shed) and a functional kitchen.

Accommodation was a tent or tipi in the bush on Kupidabin Wilderness with long drop toilets.

2013, work commenced on the building of our Cultural Centre with funds raised by a hardworking committee. 2019 we finally have our concrete surrounds – good bye mud and dust!!!!

Funds are still required for a much-needed veranda for shade.
