Bi-racial in America: it’s time for that conversation; just kidding

Well, there is Sage Steele, a bi-racial ESPN anchor who is suing ESPN. The suit has been dragging on for some time.

Here’s one piece of that story, from an October 2021 NPR piece, “ESPN anchor Sage Steele is off the air after her comments on vaccines and Obama”:

Sports anchor Sage Steele is off the air at ESPN [she’s back on now] after she called vaccine mandates “sick” and “scary” and questioned why former President Barack Obama identifies as Black even though he was raised by his white mother.

Oops.

A week ago on the podcast, Steele told Cutler, a former NFL quarterback, that she had just gotten her COVID-19 vaccine after being required to by Disney, which owns ESPN.

“I respect everyone’s decision. I really do. But to mandate it is sick, and it’s scary to me in many ways,” she said. “But I have a job, a job that I love and, frankly, a job that I need.”

Oops.

On the subject of race, Steele said she thought it was “fascinating” that Obama identified himself as Black on the U.S. census “considering his Black dad was nowhere to be found but his white mom and grandma raised him”.

OOPS.

Steele apparently believes two ESPN anchors, Michael Eaves and Elle Duncan, kept her from participating in an ESPN special.

Just so happens Eaves and Duncan are both mixed race.

So there’s a lot of OOPS here.

Of the millions of people who have one white parent and one black parent, I’m going to guess the total number who publicly and proudly state they’re black AND white is about 12.

Of those millions, I estimate the total number who say they’re neither black nor white but are just themselves is 1, maybe 2. Possibly zero.

That’s the most telling demographic.

“Gotta choose, gotta choose. Black or white?”

“Gotta iDENtify as one or the other.”

I’ve long identified as “raised by wolves in a suburban upper middle class setting offset by surrounding open fields in which deer and antelope play.” But the biased US census doesn’t permit that classification.
