Iraq: twin suicide bombings killed 38, injured over 100

Iraq's interior ministry said the death toll will likely rise as more bodies are recovered.

A double explosion in Iraq's capital city has claimed the lives of a large number of people. Iraqi officials say 38 people have died and more than 100 injured,” The Guardian reported.

The duo of suicide bombings injured dozens of people in Tayaran Square, where crowds of construction workers were gathered to seek employment, the BBC said.

"Two suicide bombers blew themselves up in al-Tayyaran square in central Baghdad," General Saad Maan, spokesman for the Joint Operations Command, disclosed.

AFP reported that there was major security presence at the site of the explosion. Iraq's interior ministry said the death toll will likely rise as more bodies are recovered.

Officials say the attacks in Baghdad are the second in the past three days.

Another suicide bomb attack took place on Saturday killing at least five people, police had said.

Responsibility for the bombings has not yet been claimed by any group, though it bears the marking of the Islamic State.

BBC reported that this resurgence of violence comes after an announcement regarding the upcoming May parliamentary elections were made.

Baghdad was previously plagued with near-daily attacks following a mass annexation of several parts of the region by the Islamic State in 2014, but a major decline came after the militant group was overthrown in Dec.
