Cuba and North Korea unite against 'imperialist' US

Concern was expressed in relation to the escalation of tensions and military drills taking place on the Korean Peninsula.

Cuban Minister of Foreign Affairs Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla welcomed his counterpart from North Korea — officially the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, DPRK — for an official visit to the Caribbean island.

Both diplomats rejected unilateral and arbitrary certifications and lists concocted by the U.S. government that serve as the basis for the application of coercive measures contrary to international law.

Rodriguez and Ri Yong Ho demanded respect for both nations' sovereignty, independence, self-determination and territorial integrity, according to Granma. They also called for peaceful settlements to political disputes and non-interference in internal affairs.

Concern was expressed in relation to the escalation of tensions and military drills taking place on the Korean Peninsula.

"The situation on the Korean Peninsula is worsening and is tense because of the increased use of military forces by the imperialists,” Ri told Rodriguez, Xinhua reported.

Both ministers reviewed the friendly state of bilateral relations based on the relationships established by their respective historical leaders, Fidel Castro Ruz and Kim Il Sung. They also shared common interests pertaining to the construction of socialism according to the realities and specificities of each country.

U.S. President Donald Trump recently announced that he put the DPRK back on its list of terror-sponsoring states.

"Should have happened a long time ago. Should have happened years ago," he said.

Trump also announced that he will impose new sanctions, the most debilitating Pyongyang has ever experienced, over the course of the coming weeks.

Among those who accompanied Ho on his official visit to Cuba were Pak Chang Yul (DPRK Ambassador to Cuba), Pak Yong Su (Director of the Department of Diplomatic Documents) and Ri Il Gyu (Deputy Director of Asia, Africa and Latin America for the DPRK Foreign Ministry).

Several Cuban officials from the Foreign Ministry accompanied Rodriguez at the meeting.
