Film: A Quest to Heal - Beyond the Physical

An Odyssey of the Heart

We don’t fully understand how to harness and direct it yet, but theoretically we hold an amazing capacity to channel this energy to heal the body.” - Dr Marc Cohen, Professor of Health Sciences, RMIT

“So why do some heal against the odds?  Is it the placebo effect? Or is there a universal energy or internal healing mechanism some can tap into? If so, how do we harness it?”  Ruth Ostrow from “Mind Over Matter” - The Australian

A QUEST TO HEAL – BEYOND THE PHYSICAL, the compelling new feature documentary by award winning Australian director Michelle Mahrer releases nationally on August 23 with a series of special Premiere screenings and Q&As allowing audiences an opportunity to meet the filmmaker.

Ten years in the making, A QUEST TO HEAL is an intimate human story that invites us to consider new ways of healing beyond the western medical model, exploring the healing powers of the heart and the untapped powers of the mind.

About QUEST TO HEAL

In this moving documentary, Michelle follows the journey of two of her friends - Lya Shaked from Melbourne who has terminal cancer and Fred Porter from USA who has HIV - on a healing odyssey to Brazil to see controversial spiritual healer Joao Texeira de Faria.  Also known as John of God he has been attributed to many miracles that science cannot explain and for the past 30 years, thousands of people from all over the world have been flocking to his remote village in Brazil in search of cures for illnesses for which Western medicine offers little hope. The film follows Lya and Fred through the various healing processes at the healing centre consisting of meditation, prayer and procedures known as invisible spiritual operations. Energy is said to be the healing currency. The film maker asks the question “Is John of God another faith healer exploiting vulnerable people or can something be happening here beyond the western medical model? Are there some people like John of God and other healers like him such as indigenous shamans, Jesus or even the Buddha who have access to a greater healing energy and can we tap into this ourselves?”

With compelling cinematography and a poetic visual style, A Quest To Heal – Beyond The Physical reveals how healing is so much more than simply curing the physical body. It can be a self-empowering journey that begins from within, encompassing our mind, body and soul. The film inspires us to consider a healing of the future that integrates both western medicine and spirituality.
