Star of Taroom

A 160kg Groove Stone. A 500km Walk. And Plenty of Unfinished Business.

45 years ago, a very special Aboriginal groove stone was pulled from the earth with a tractor, loaded into a ute and removed from Iman Country. This July it’s going home, not by ute, but in a hand cart. Join us as we push, pull and walk the Star of Taroom 500km across the backroads and backblocks of South East Queensland from Brisbane to Taroom.

Aunty Heather Tobane

Iman Elder and Wardingarri Aboriginal Corporation chairperson, Aunty Heather, shares her feelings on what the Star of Taroom’s repatriation journey means to her and the Iman.

Why we are walking:

The Star of Taroom is just one of the tens of thousands of cultural heritage Items taken from Ancestral Lands since 1788. In walking the Star back to Country, we hope to highlight the healing and transformative power of repatriation, not just for individuals and communities, but for entire nations.

The Star of Taroom Project acknowledges First Nations Peoples and recognises their continuous connection to Country, Community and Culture. We pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging, and honour the sharing of traditional stories and knowledge passed down through generations.

In particular, the Star of Taroom Project acknowledges the Iman people, who have graciously allowed us to walk together and carry their valuable cultural heritage item home to Country. We also wish to thank the Waka Waka and Jinibara people who have allowed us to traverse their lands, and the Yuggera and Turrbal people whose Ancestors have watched over the Star of Taroom for the past 45 years.

The Star of Taroom Project recognises the importance of returning cultural heritage to Country, and understands our responsibility to undertake this repatriation responsibly and in accordance with cultural protocols.
